Vintage Fabric

As I am getting really close to finishing my first piece of clothing I have sewn myself I have been looking around for fabric and dreaming up what I want to sew next.  Its really crazy how easy it is to do when you follow the patterns and directions!  My first piece was a button up shirt, which I will post about when I am through and its photographed, but now I am thinking with all this nice weather and summer around the corner I need to start looking at fabric for a dress.  I just scored some really awesome fabrics from Bingo Vintage and that started my quest to find more pretty vintage fabrics!  Here's a couple I have favorited on Etsy.
vintage 60s fabric blue flowers
vintage red and white fabric
vintage mid century fabric
vintage atomic fabric
vintage 40s fabric flowers
vintage blue atomic starburst fabric
I am so in love with the last print!  Red, black, and blue starburst???  Love it...  I actually think I am going to buy it right now.  I can't pass it up.

aaannnnnnnnndddddddddd...  done.

Hope you all are having a wonderful week!  Its in the 70s in Minnesota and I cannot believe it!  And only one more week until I make the 23 hour drive back home to North Carolina!

Spring is in the air...

vintage inspired vena cava collection
vintage retro inspired clothing lena hoschek spring summer 2011
***If you have never checked out Lena Hoschek's collections, you need to get on that!  She has AMAZING pieces.  They are kind of expensive, but they are so pretty to look at.  Especially her lookbooks.  You can also go to the website and get a free poster.  She puts one out with each collection and on the back of the poster is the catalog!  So cool!***

I had to put together a little spring inspiration this morning because its going to be 55 degrees outside today and I can't wait to take the kids to the park!  That sounds so weird of me to say, but it has been in the 20s and 30s lately and even snowing, so I will take 55 over that any day!  My mood has been less than great lately and the weather may have something to do with it.  I will be in North Carolina for 3 weeks soon enjoying the warm weather and won't be back to the Twin Cities until mid-April.  Hopefully by then it will be really nice out!  I just might have to do this every year to battle the end-of-winter-blues (and not saying blues because winter is over, but because it drags out so long).  Hope all these awesome things are getting you into the mood for Spring!  I am ready!

She & Him: Don't Look Back

She & Him - Don't Look Back from Merge Records on Vimeo.

I came across this video the other day and I am totally smitten.  For one, its She & Him, which is half Zooey Deschanel.  I've never really been into this music, but because she"s involved I love it.  She's so adorable it kills me!  This song is actually pretty good, though.  Its  catchy and its got a vintage feel.  The real reason I'm sharing it is because the furniture.  Oh my god, its amazing!  I love the boxy wooden couch and shelving!  I really need to find this stuff somewhere!  Well, after I find the money to pay for it!

Big Score!

pyrex golden harvest
The other day we took a trip to Goodwill because we needed a couple of extra plates, because we always ran out during our dinner parties.  My husband and I picked through everything and I could not believe what I found.  These 3 Pyrex dishes were sitting together stacked and no one had shown any interest at all.  They were at the back of the shelf with a matching butter dish.  I had to get them.  I already had the Golden Harvest butter dish, so I just picked up these bowls.  I now regret not getting the that dish.  I can hear it calling my name.  I should have saved it and given it to a good home!  I am going to start collecting pieces for the vintage adoption agency I am starting.  Cause, honestly, I have treated these Pyrex dishes like they were children.

Edit:  Can't believe I didn't share the price of these!  They were 4 bucks each, so I got the whole set for 12 bucks!

Vintage Love

I love having photos of my family, but I love having the old ones even more!  My grandmother (pictured in the picture above on the right) started giving me some of her old photographs that were sitting in a tiny closet below the stairs in her house.  I was so honored to take them.  I am still not sure how I am going to display them, but I really need to figure it out.  They're too beautiful not to!
These are only a fraction of my collection, but they're some of my favorites.  The very first picture is so adorable.  Its my grandfather with a girl he knew when he was younger.  The picture is only about 2 inches wide, but there is so much detail.
The two portraits and pictures after are of my grandparents together.  They were so cute then and they were still cute together years after that.  I have so many fond memories going to their house when I was a kid.  I still love going there.  My grandfather passed away years ago, and it was a horrible blow.  I was really worried about my grandmother, but she coped really well.  She is the most amazing woman I have ever met, and will ever meet.  I don't think she has done one bad thing in her entire life.  She is a saint.  When I moved she was the hardest to say goodbye to and I only saw her every couple of months!  What can I say, my grandma has a special place in my heart.  I can't wait to go see her!

If you enjoyed these, you should go out Secia's Scanning into the Past Part I, II, III, and IV.  Her mother is absolutely gorgeous!

Goodwill Finds

vintage dishes from goodwill st paul, mn
We've been having a lot of dinner parties lately and last week noticed that we were running out of dishes faster than we could keep up.  Perfect excuse to visit our local Goodwill to get a bunch for cheap.  I hadn't been to one here in the Twin Cities yet, so I was blown away when we showed up.  It was huge!  Not to mention it was Thursday and it was half off toddler clothing (which we also needed to pick up since our two-year-old barely has any warm clothing)!  So, we get to dishes and I start freaking out.  There was so many adorable vintage plates!

The top came as a set of 2, they only had one of the middle, since it was a huge serving plate, and a set of 4 for the last plate.  I also got a set of four olive green bowls (my favorite color!).  You can never have too many bowls around the house.

This wasn't vintage, but I had to get it.  I have been drinking tea a lot lately and only had plane white coffee cups.  I needed one just for me.  Something about drinking tea in the morning in a cute mug makes me feel happy!
All in all, it was a great shopping trip!  All those housewares totaled up to $6.00!!!  I love thrifting!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!  I will be posting some of my holiday pictures soon!

Vintage Love... And Then Not So Much

Awhile ago I bought a strawberry canister set from GoodWill.  At the time it was the absolute cutest thing I had ever seen in the entire world.  And for 9 bucks, I had to have it.  I bought it, brought it home, and basked in its vintage goodness.  I was so happy that I finally found a set that was me.

The thing is, they aren't me.  Yes, they are really, really adorable, but they do not go with my dream kitchen vision that I am working towards.  I knew this when I bought them!  I pushed that to the back of my mind, and I had to have the canisters.  Its like them being vintage and the awesome price tag were calling me to make the purchase.  "Take us home!  Love us!"

So, is thrifting and antiquing like a drug?  Do we lose our common sense when picking up items that interest us?  Do we get lost when we start thinking about how awesome they are, even if we don't need them, or even really want them?  I wish they would do a study about this.  It would be interesting to find out.  I'm sure a couple of you out there would be categorized as addicts!

So, am I the only one that does this?  Finds something that at the moment is the greatest thing, and then after awhile wonder, "why did I buy this again?"  If I'm not, let me know!  And if you have a link, share it!

---Maybe I need to open a vintage shop.  Pass all my awesome finds that aren't really my taste for others to enjoy :)---

Around the Mountain House

This post is well overdue!  Its been over a week since we got back from the mountains.  I did want to make sure I showed you these pictures, though.  This house is so amazing.  I wish I could take you all there.  It was a lot of fun taking all these pictures.  It gave me a chance to appreciate all the small details that I would have otherwise missed.

I wish I could have taken the sun dial with me.  That quote is adorable!

----On a side note, is anyone else having problems with their Blogger design?  I am having problems with the Blogger template design options.  I haven't messed with the design in awhile, and I checked it out the other day and my font is huge and the background doesn't go with the scroll.  Does anyone know how to fix this?  I'm lost since its just options Blogger has provided.  Maybe they're having problems and it will work itself out.  Let's hope so!----

Have a good Tuesday and hopefully I will be posting again soon!

Pretty Wall Prints

This past week I have done a couple of posts that dealt with my trip to the mountains this weekend.  Well, this one is no different.  While I was in the house I could not get over the wallpaper.  There were so many cute and interesting prints!  They just don't make things like they used to.

I'm completely in love with that last one.  I wish there was some way I could rip it off the walls and sew it into a dress.  I'm sure I could, but it would be a little stiff.  Oh well...  I need to find some pretty fabric with those light pink flowers!  Which is your favorite?
